Definition of Obesity - What is it?

The definition of obesity according to Wikipedia:

"Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems."

Obesity is a condition that afflicts millions of people. Not that the definition of obesity states that adverse health effects may occur. If you do not have adverse health effects, you may still be obese and should work to reduce your body fat before your health declines. Obesity can lead to many different health issues and should be taken very seriously.

Lose Big with Jillian Michaels There are many different causes of obesity. A sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits are two of the top contributors of obesity. Often, people that are overweight have low energy levels and that prevents them from exercising. As their energy levels decrease, so does their ability to be active, which can create even more weight gain. However, changes in diet can help reverse the effects of obesity and adding an exercise regimen is also a major factor in creating a healthier lifestyle.

A balanced diet is very important when you are trying to lose weight. Eating the right amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables along with decreasing the amount of foods that are high in saturated fats can lead to a marked improvement. Changing the way you eat can also help. Instead of eating three (or more) large meals a day, opt to eat around six much smaller meals throughout the day. Doing so can help kick start your metabolism and enhance your energy levels.

Body mass index (BMI) levels are a key factor for the definition of obesity. BMI levels are a way to calculate your fat level. There are four categories:

  • Underweight
  • Normal weight
  • Overweight
  • Obese

BMI is calculated using your height and weight. A BMI that is higher than 30 indicates obesity. It should be noted that BMI calculators are generally only used for adult men and women, and shouldn’t be used to calculate obesity in children.

People that are obese have many different health concerns. The added weight can put a huge strain on your heart and lungs. It can also affect your bones and muscles. People that are overweight are at an increased risk of suffering from heart attacks and strokes. They also are more prone to Type 2 diabetes. People with Type 2 diabetes have problems breaking down sugar into simple glucose. This can lead to many different health problems, including frequent infections and the inability to heal at a normal rate. An interesting aspect of Type 2 diabetes is that it is reversible. If you are overweight and are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes losing weight using diet and exercise can cause the condition to go away.

The definition of obesity is much more serious than the definition of being overweight. Being overweight can cause health issues, but being obese can cause even more issues that are much more serious and are actually deadly. Fortunately, by making a few lifestyle changes you can reverse the negative effects that obesity can have on your body. Eating foods in moderation and that are good for you along with regular exercise can have a profound effect on your weight. Making those positive changes can help save your life.
