Good Sources of Protein

Finding good sources of protein is essential to the body. Without protein, the body cannot maintain proper function and growth and will not be able to repair damaged muscle tissues. Good sources of protein are important for everyone's diet, especially for athletes. Including enough protein in your diet can actually help you lose weight faster.

Variety is important when it comes to eating protein. There are many different types of foods that are high in protein. Unfortunately, some of them can also be high in other substances not healthy for the body such as fat and cholosterol. Good sources of protein include:

  • Chicken
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Beans
  • Dairy products
  • Pork
  • Protein Supplements

    Foods such as yogurt, cottage cheese and milk are great sources of protein. Be careful when consuming dairy products as they can sometimes be high in fat. Try to opt for low fat options when consuming dairy products.

    Fish is amazing source of protein including salmon, tuna, and herring to name a few. The best part about fish is that it is also a source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are very important to cardiovascular health. Wild fish are much better than farm raised fish as they provide a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. Those in farm raised animals is completely different.

    Red meat such as steak and hamburger are viable protein suppliers. White meat chicken with the skin removed should also be part of a healthy diet. Dark skinned meats have higher levels of fat in them and should be eaten in modertaion. Pork is another good source of protein.

    Black beans, pinto beans, soy beans and lentils are a great protein source for those of us that are vegan of vegetarian. They are also high in fiber and help to maitain proper GI function. Tofu can be used as a substitute for meats in certain recipes. If you are concerned about getting more protein in your diet you can try whey protein or for vegans you can try hemp protein to help meet your dietary requiements.

    Certain types of nuts and seeds are also great sources of protein. Peanuts and almonds have high amounts of protein in them, and so does peanut butter. Flax seeds, sunflower seed and pumpkin seeds are good snacks as well.

    Protein is a muscle builder, and is used extensively by people that want to increase their muscle size. Protein stimulates collagen production, which leads to healthy looking skin and hair. Eating a variety of foods that contain protein is important, because some foods that contain protein are also high in fats. That's why it is important to incorporate all different types of foods in a healthy diet. Getting the right amount of protein can add serious strength to the body's framework and also add to muscle mass.
