Holiday Weight Loss Tip - How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain and Over Eating.
Want a holiday weight loss tip or two to help you avoid unreasonable holiday weight gain.
It's that time of year again when our favorite holiday treats come out,
and learning how to avoid holiday weight gain becomes an important topic.
The average person gains about 1 pound per holiday, which can
average to about 5-7 lbs by the end of the holiday season.
Weight gain over the holidays is caused by a number of factors including:
- Increased Stress
- Depression
- Too Many Food Options
- Excess Sugar
- Excessive Alcohol Intake
We face many challenges during the holiday seasons. Many dieters become overwhelmed by
the shear abundance of food that they forgo dieting for the season.
But you do not have to be overwhelmed by the holiday seasons or the food options
presented to you. Below I will discuss a number of techniques on how to avoid holiday
weight gain. You can use them to participate in your holiday activities while still maintaining your current weight and fitness routines.
Holiday Weight Loss Tip List
Use Moderation. The first holiday weight loss tip is that its OK to have a little,
just not a lot. Anything is OK in moderation. Want a piece of pumpkin pie? Have a
smaller sized piece or split a slice with someone in your family. Try to pick one or two
smaller sized portions of your favorite holiday sweets to enjoy. A couple bites is all you
should need to satisfy your craving.
Don't Skip Meals. We figure since we are going to be eating a large meal for
Thanksgiving or Chritsmas, that it is OK if we skip eating beforehand. WRONG! By skipping
breakfast before a large meal you set yourself up for eating more through binge eating.
Also, your body is now switching to starvation mode in which it wants to save energy and
store fats. So now, not only are you eating more, you are storing it all as fat.
Enjoy Holiday Activites. Diets are not the only thing that tend to go south
during the holidays. We all are busy coooking and shopping that exercise is put on the back
burner. Try starting some new holidays traditions like walking around to see different light
displays, going sledding, ice skating or skiing.
Don't Wait For New Year's. Everyone gets in the habit of saying, I will change
after New Year's. Don't wait until then, make a plan and stick to it NOW. Make a schedule
of when you plan to exercise over the holidays and how. You are more likely to stick to a
schedule than saying I'm going to walk after work today.
If you don't have time for a full workout that's OK. Do a half work out, but do not skip
your routine. The more you skip and the more excuses you make, the harder it is to get back into
the routine of things.
Water is Your Friend. Carry a glass of water around with you at all times.
Having something in your hands will keep you from reaching in that bowl of chips. It will also
keep high calorie beer and champagne out of your hands.
If you still feel your hands reaching into the chip bowl, sit yourself beside a bowl of
fruit or vegetables. They are healthier and will fill you up before your big feast. I did this
once ate Thanksgiving. I ate so much pineapple I could barely eat any stuffing or mashed
potatoes after my turkey.
Stay Out of the Kitchen. A great holiday weight loss tip. The more time you spend in the kitchen the more
likely you are to pick at different food options before they are even presented. The more you
stay away from food, the less chances you have to give in to temptation.
Skip the Condiments. Pass on the gravy, salad dressing and high calorie
condiments. These are usually where the extra calories really pack on.
Spend Time Socializing. The last holiday weight loss tip is to spend your time
enjoying the company of those you love. Being with family and friends is what the holidays
are about. Catch up with family and friends and preoccupy yourself with talking instead of
eating.
If you recently had a relative or friend pass away, spending time with people that make
you happy will keep your mind preoccupied and help you avoid emotional eating.
Follow these techniques on how to avoid holiday weight gain and I gurantee you will
maintain your weight or at least minimize your weight gain over the holidays.
