How to Train for Swimming

Want to try a triathalon but the swimming part worries you. No problem. Learn how to train for swimming here.

Swimming is terrific total body and caridovascular exercise. The wonderful part about it is that it is low impact for those of us with joint issues or for those out there who are pregnant.

Swimming is not just jumping in the pool and doing the doggy paddle or splashing around and kicking. If you do that, you will wonder why you ever considered trying swimming in the first place.

You need to traing yourself properly for the sport of swimming. To learn more on how to train for swimming, read on.

Start Slow

Do not overexert yourself on the first go. Swimming is an extremely exhausting sport. It will be difficult for you at first. You are going to be using muscle that you do not normally use in your every day life. Just start slow and listen to your body.

Try doing short 25 meter stretches at first. Then move up to 50 meters.

Strength Train the Proper Muscles

If you have not already, take up some strength training that incorporates pull-ups and dips. If you have already incorporated these exercises, try increasing the intensity or performing more.

Your legs are also an important part of swimming for don't forget to work out your legs.

Concentrate on Your Stroke

Do not try and work your stroke as one solitary movement. Try to pay attention to each part of your stroke. Concentrate on your legs, your arms, turning your head up to breath in, and breathing out under water separately. Once you master each of these individual aspects of your stroke, then you can put them all together for an overall better stroke.

Try doing laps using only your arms or only your legs to work on the different areas of your stroke.

Practice Makes Perfect

You can not get better at something without practice. The more practice you put in the better. It's always better to do 3-4 15-20 minutes sessions than trying to cram in 2 45 minute sessions.

If you are training for a competition, such as a triathalon, try pushing yourself harder as you get closer to the event. Make sure not to overexert yourself.

Don't Hit a Rut

When you train, your sometimes hit a plateau. This is caused by doing the same exercise routine over and over again. Not only will you get bored so will you body. Try changing up your routine for better results. This will keep both you and your body interested in training.
