Everyone in today's day and age is looking for that one perfect workout to solve all their exercise and weight loss problems. We spend millions on infomercials claiming to be the end of all your workout searches. We excitely spend millions on workout gimmicks only ro receive sub par results? Why? The truth of the matter is no matter how well planned out a fitness routine is, it will only work for a short period of time. This is called a plateau. Everyone comes to a plateau point whether they are lifting weights, running, or eating the right foods. Do you get bored doing the same thing day in and day out? Well guess what? So does your body. In the first 1-3 weeks of a workout program you see tremendous results which drops off around the 4th week. At this point, your body has adjusted to your workout routine through muscle memory. It no longer responds to exercise in the same way it did in your first weeks. We get the body reved up again by introducing something different. Here are some tips for implimenting muscle confusion into your workout routine.
Change things up in your workout routine. Have you been lifting weights the past 3-4 weeks? Put them down and try going just cardio for a week. If you ran 3-4 weeks trying lifting some weights. If you erally want to throw a curveball to your body, try introducing yoga to you workout routine. I like taking a week off from the weights and try hittig the driving range, go for walks around the block, or try to schedule some ultimate frisbee with my friends. When I return to my normal routine, my body is ready to respond again. The goal to the "perfect workout routine" is that you should have multiple perfect workouts to switch around to.
If you are running, try mixing in some sprints to your routine. Your body will respond to the changes in intensity it is not used to. Do not be discourage by hitting a plateau. It happens to everyone. It's just the body's way of telling us that it needs a break from its typical routine. Change things up and you will start seeing results again. The purpose of muscle confusion is to not allow your body to adapt to any routine you do. Vary your exercise and diet, and you can kiss goodbye to to your weight loss plateaus. |
