Everyone in today's day and age is looking for that one perfect workout to solve all their exercise and weight loss problems. We spend millions on infomercials claiming to be the end of all your workout searches. We excitedly spend millions on workout gimmicks only to receive sub par results? Why?
The truth of the matter is no matter how well planned out a fitness routine is, it will only work for a short period of time. This is called a plateau.
Everyone comes to a plateau point whether they are lifting weights, running, or eating the right foods. Do you get bored doing the same thing day in and day out? Well guess what? So does your body.
In the first 1-3 weeks of a workout program you see tremendous results which drop off around the 4th week. At this point, your body has adjusted to your workout routine through muscle memory. It no longer responds to exercise in the same way it did in your first weeks.
We get the body pumped up again by introducing something different. Here are some tips for implementing muscle confusion into your workout routine.
- Variety Is The Spice Of Life
Change things up in your workout routine. Have you been lifting weights the past 3-4 weeks? Put them down and try going just cardio for a week. If you ran 3-4 weeks trying lifting some weights.
If you really want to throw a curveball to your body, try introducing yoga to you workout routine.
I like taking a week off from the weights and try hitting the driving range, go for walks around the block, or try to schedule some ultimate frisbee with my friends. When I return to my normal routine, my body is ready to respond again.
The goal to the "perfect workout routine" is that you should have multiple perfect workouts to switch around to.
- Rev Up The Intensity
Try performing strip sets in your workout. A strip set is when you do a set at one weight and then do another set right after at a lower weight. Try performing 3-4 strip sets with the last set performed until failure.
If you are running, try mixing in some sprints to your routine. Your body will respond to the changes in intensity it is not used to.
Do not be discouraged by hitting a plateau. It happens to everyone. It's just the body's way of telling us that it needs a break from its typical routine. Change things up and you will start seeing results again.
The purpose of muscle confusion is to not allow your body to adapt to any routine you do. Vary your exercise and diet, and you can kiss goodbye to your weight loss plateaus.
