Protein Supplements - Helping You Build Muscle Quicker.

Protein supplements are taken by those participating in an atheletic or weight training program to aid in muscle growth and fat loss. Supplements come in many different shapes and forms. Below we will discuss some of the different ways you can get extra protein into your body.

Why Should I Take Protein Supplements?

  • The body needs protein for muscle growth and repair
  • Insufficient protein can lead to torn muscles
  • Supplements are a quick and easy way to greatly increase protein intake
  • Helpful for vegetarians that cannot eat meat

How Can I Supplement My Protein Intake

Most people get their protein through the consumption of animal products such as chicken, beef, and milk. Those who want a extra boost in protein can find it in the form of powders and protein bars.

    Protein Powder
When you think of protein supplements, those huge containers of protein powder is probably what comes to mind. Protein powders are a cost effective way of greatly boosting your protein intake. Below you can find information on the most common sources of protein powder so you can find the right one for you.

  • Whey Protein
           Side effects
           Facts
  • Casein Protein
  • Egg Protein
  • Soy Protein
  • Hemp Protein
  • Rice Protein

Do not cook with protein powders. They are temperature sensative, especially whey protein. Just dissolve your powder in water and drink right away. Some people use milk or fruit juice as well to add to the taste.

There are some powders out there that are weight-gaining powders. Weight-gaining powders have a lot more carbs and fat in them. I recommend sticking to a regular protein powder described above. You will gain weight as you build muscle mass.

    Protein Bars

Protein bars vary greatly from brand to brand in the number of carbs, protein and fat. Protein bars are convenient for right after your workout but often have protein inferior to that in powders. Therefote, I do not recommend protein bars as regular use protein supplements.

One benefit is that they are usually loaded with other vitamin and minerals. Although some claim to be a meal replacement, I do not recommend replacing your daily intake of frutis and vegetables for a protein bar.

    Picking a Good Bar

  • High in protein, low in suger
  • Look for those low in carbs and fat content
  • Pick a bar with more fiber
  • Read the ingredients, if you need a chemistry book to decypher it, put it back
