That is what I believe the real benefit of a diet should be - teaching you a new and healthy way of living. The diet is a creation of a cardiologist named Dr. Arthur Agatson, and works through a number of different phases - three in total. The first two last for a specific amount of time and the third last for the rest of your lifetime. A great alternative with this diet is that you do not have to count calories and weigh portions. I have been a calorie counter myself and although it is useful to know what?s going into your body, it can be a bit time consuming. The Diet allows you to eat 3 full meals a day along with 2-3 snacks between meals. You should never feel like you are starving or depriving yourself of a good meal. Minus the first couple weeks, it really has a lot of variety to it. A diet that allows you to lose weight while allowing for a glass of wine and chocolate cake sounds good to anyone. South Beach Diet Review and Phase GuidePhase 1 ? Rapid Weight Loss The first phase lasts for 2 weeks and is the most restricting part of the diet. It was my least favorite part of the diet because as an athlete, carbohydrates are very important to me. But for the sake of giving my two cents and a proper review on the diet, I gave this a shot. You basically reduced your cravings for high carb foods by restricting your index of sugar and starches. I found this a bit daunting the first couples of days but my body adjusted fairly well afterwards. My workouts were definitely affected by the lack of carbs. I was able to lift my weight fairly well but cardio really took a toll on me. This seemed to get better as I got further into the diet. I was not surprised but rather expected this side effect of the first 2 weeks. Phase 2 ? Continued Weight Loss I must say this is the better part of the diet. I can eat some carbohydrates again! Boy was I happy. You still have to stay away from sugars and low value carbs such as white bread. You are allowed to have a glass of wine every day. This part of diet allows you to lose 1-2 lbs a week and should be continued until you reach your desired goal weight. My workouts definitely improved on this portion of the diet. Since carbohydrates are still restricted a bit, I saved mine for before my workouts. This what I would have enough energy to keep them at the length and intensity I desired. Phase 3 ? Maintenance You have reached your goal weight and now have learned about making healthier choices in your life. There are no food restrictions as long as everything is kept in moderation. So you still can?t eat a pint of Hagen Das all by yourself. You have already learned all the principles it has to teach. I would much rather you try the South Beach Diet than an Adkin?s diet. It seems to work for many people as long as you understand the choices in food it?s trying to teach you. If you fall of the rail, you can always go back to Phase 2 or Phase 1. I found Phase 1 a bit harsh and it?s no wonder that most people drop out during the first two weeks. It really is hard and I hate diets that completely restrict food group. A diet without fruit ? sounds a bit absurd and unhealthy. I would rather a diet that does not restrict any food groups, especially if you have a high activity level. Overall, if you?re looking for a way to lose some weight pretty fast, the South Beach diet can help you get there. I would suggest just skipping to Phase 2 as it seems a bit more practical. You can still lose weight, but at a more reasonable pace without the feeling of wanting to devour the next bag of potato chips you see.
